The Super Eagles of Nigeria suffered a huge setback as they were defeated 2-0 by South Africa in the opening game of the 2019 AFCON Qualifiers on June 10, 2017, at the Godswill Akpabio stadium in Uyo.

Tokelo Rantie and Percy Tau scored two second half goals as the Eagles were defeated by their rivals.

Voice of Ndigbo understands that prior to the mouthwatering encounter in Uyo, Nigeria had never lost a competitive match against the South Africans at the senior level.

The Eagles are set to miss out of the third successive AFCON tournament after winning it in 2013.

You may recall that South Africa denied Nigeria a place at the 2015 AFCON at the same venue in November, 2014. That game ended 2-2.

The Super Eagles are now 3rd on the Group E table of the AFCON Qualifier following defeat to Bafana Bafana with five games to go.
